The research activities of the Department are aimed at developing the engineering and technological aspects of pharmaceutical production in accordance with the principles of Good Practices (GxP) and modern requirements of the pharmaceutical industry.
The main areas of the Department’s work include:
- conducting fundamental and applied research in pharmaceutical engineering, production of medical devices, validation of technological processes, and quality assurance;
- developing the integration of science and education through the participation of faculty members, undergraduates, and students in research projects;
- applying research results to improve the educational process and enhance staff qualifications;
- strengthening international scientific cooperation and participating in joint programs, grants, and projects;
- contributing to the development of human resources and training of young researchers in pharmaceutical technologies and engineering disciplines.
Every year, the Department actively participates in competitions for grant funding of scientific and scientific-technical projects (Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan), university internal grants, and international programs (Erasmus+).
The Department implements the following scientific projects: «Development of full-cycle production of plant substances based on medicinal plants of the South Kazakhstan region» (2024–2026 yy.) and «Pharmaceutical development and pharmacological study of dental films for use in dental practice» (2023–2025 yy.).
Support for young scientists (Grants «Zhas Galym»): «Synthesis of highly efficient multifunctional ion exchangers based on epoxy compounds for environmentally sustainable technologies and resource conservation» (2025–2027 yy. ) and «Development of technology for obtaining and standardization of cardiotonic profile extracts» (2024–2026 yy.).
Intra-university grants: «Creation of technology and standardization of pharmaceutical products based on kaolinite clays and essential oils of medicinal plants» and «Pharmaceutical development of oral care products based on plant substances for orthodontics».
Under the Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (KA171) program, the project «Mobility of higher education students and staff between EU Member States and third countries associated to the Programme and third countries not associated to the Programme» is being implemented.
Department staff regularly publish their research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded, included in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quartiles of Web of Science, and ranked by CiteScore in Scopus (Q1, Q2, Q3).
Every year, the Department demonstrates high inventive activity, publishing monographs and electronic textbooks developed for the educational process.
The Department places special emphasis on academic mobility and international cooperation. Faculty members complete research internships at leading foreign universities, including:
- Comenius University (Bratislava, Slovakia);
- International University of Innovative Technologies (IUIT) (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan);
- Fudan University (Shanghai, PRC);
- Shenzhen University (PRC) — under the joint SZU Top Ranking Project.
The internship was carried out as part of the KazNMU faculty professional development program. The program aims to develop scientific competencies, exchange experience, and conduct joint research with professors and researchers of partner universities.
