Intensive development of biotechnology in accordance with the requirements of scientific and technical progress, the use of products of microorganisms’ vital activity not only to obtain antibiotics, but also other medicinal substances (vitamins, enzymes, polysaccharides, amino acids, alkaloids) requires the training of specialists in the field of biotechnological production.
Biotechnology – industrial utilization of biological processes and systems based on cultivation of highly effective forms of microorganisms, cultures of cells and tissues of plants and animals with the properties required by humans.
Biotechnology is a field of knowledge that allows to obtain by controlled cultivation of organisms and their fragments (cells, tissues) useful products for human use: medical, diagnostic preparations, various raw materials, means of plant and animal protection, as well as to utilize (convert) various wastes (industrial, agricultural, municipal).
Biotechnology is a demanded and promising direction in medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, food industry and other industries. Biotechnology as a theoretical and applied science focused on research and development is promising.
The course of general chemical technology is also of great importance for training of qualified personnel for educational programs “Technology of pharmaceutical production” and “Pharmacy”.
Given the above, in September 2022, in order to update the structural units of the School of Pharmacy, to ensure and implement the educational process by decision of the management of the Kazakh National Medical University was established Department of Biotechnology and General Chemical Technology. Since September 2022, the department is headed by Ph.D, Associate Professor of the Department of Biotechnology and General Chemical Technology Zhaparkulova Karlygash Altynbekovna.

At the youngest department of the university in the 2022-2023 academic year, 50 students studying in the educational program “Technology of pharmaceutical production” chose to specialize in biotechnology and successfully defended their diploma works.

In 2023-2024 academic year the list of disciplines on which students are trained at the department is significantly expanded and includes disciplines necessary for the formation of a comprehensive view of the entire technological chain of obtaining any biologically active compound obtained by biotechnology methods.
