DEVELOPMENT OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL POTENTIAL OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY AND GENERAL CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY

The Department of Biotechnology and General Chemical Technology of the School of Pharmacy is actively developing its scientific and educational potential within the framework of the educational programs «Pharmaceutical Production Technology» (specialization in Biological and Biotechnological Preparations) and «Pharmacy» (specialization in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology). The department’s main objective is to enhance the training of highly qualified specialists proficient in modern technologies for obtaining and analyzing biological and pharmaceutical products.

As part of the grant funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the department is implementing a research project entitled «Development of a Full-Cycle Production of Plant Substances Based on Medicinal Plants of the South Kazakhstan Region», supervised by K.A. Zhaparkulova.

Within the framework of this project, 66 plant species of the South Kazakhstan region are being studied. The research includes pharmacognostic analysis, identification of plant species and their taxonomic status, assessment of natural resources of medicinal plants, and the study of propagation and regeneration features in harvesting areas.

To effectively accomplish research tasks and improve the practical training of students, the department has been equipped with modern laboratory instruments:

– IKA RV 8 rotary evaporator with a cooling system and pump, designed for obtaining pharmaceutical products (extracts), solvent evaporation, and extract drying;

– CAMAG UV Cabinet, used for identification and analysis of biologically active compounds by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), authenticity control of herbal raw materials, and evaluation of extract quality by fluorescence under ultraviolet light.

The use of this equipment significantly expands the department’s capabilities in conducting experimental research and developing pharmaceutical substances.

To train staff and students in the use of the equipment, a training session will be held on October 21, 2025, at 13:00, at the B. Atchabarov Research Institute of Pharmaceutical and Medical Sciences (Room 205). The session will be conducted by engineer-experts from LLP «Laborin», and participants will receive certificates of completion.

In the future, a cascade training program will be introduced for master’s, doctoral, and undergraduate students to continue research within scientific projects, thereby promoting the development of student research activities (SRW) and strengthening the scientific potential of the School of Pharmacy.
