Opening of Educational Laboratory No. 5 of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at the JSC «Kazakh National Medical University named after S.D. Asfendiyarov» traces its history back to 1953. Today, the department represents a modern center for pharmaceutical education, scientific research, and student participation in international competitions.

The department staff consists of 12 academic personnel, including:

  • 2 Doctors of Pharmaceutical Sciences,
  • 3 Candidates of Chemical Sciences,
  • 3 Masters of Technical Sciences, 2 of whom are PhD candidates in «Technology of Pharmaceutical Production»,
  • 2 specialists.

The department has also welcomed new high-profile scientists with significant academic reputations, further strengthening its research and educational potential.

The department implements scientific programs related to the development and standardization of pharmaceutical products. These include the creation of beta-lactam antibiotics, development of therapeutic and prophylactic toothpastes, and pharmaceutical forms based on domestic medicinal plant raw materials, as well as evaluation of their quality.

International cooperation is carried out with various foreign universities, including the Tashkent Pharmaceutical Institute, University of Alfraganus, Pharmaceutical Institute of Education and Research, NFAU, Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece), Siberian State Medical University (Tomsk, Russia), Bashkir State Medical University (Ufa, Russia), and the V.N. Orekhovich Research Institute (Moscow, Russia). Within the framework of memorandum agreements, the following activities are implemented:

  • Joint research projects,
  • Investigation and standardization of new pharmaceutical molecules,
  • Student exchange programs for one or more semesters,
  • Joint Master’s or PhD programs,
  • Research internships and practical training for doctoral students and faculty,
  • Organization of scientific seminars and conferences,
  • Joint publications and research reports,
  • New synthesis methods and in silico pharmacological studies.

Students actively participate in international and national Olympiads, scientific tournaments, and conferences, such as BIOPHARM QUIZ and MedUSE. This year, 15 winners were recognized in national, all-Russian, and international competitions. These activities contribute to students’ professional development and the formation of practical skills in pharmaceutical chemistry.

The opening of Educational Laboratory No. 5 will expand the department’s scientific and practical work, provide students with in-depth practical training, and enable research in accordance with the curriculum requirements. This step demonstrates the university’s commitment to developing modern pharmaceutical education and promoting innovative research.
