The chemistry department of KazNMU was organized on May 5, 1934 at (ASMI). The founder and the first head of the department was docent – Litvinova Nina Nikolaevna. Teaching of students was carried out in three subjects: general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical and colloidal chemistry.

Chemistry department was headed by docent Ilyinsky Tikhon Fedorovich during the years 1949-1971.

In 1951 a pharmaceutical faculty was opened at ASMI.

In 1971 chemistry department was divided into two: department of general chemistry of medical faculties, headed by docent Ikhsanov Zhumazhan Abuovich, and department of chemistry of pharmaceutical faculties, headed by docent Gorkovsky Dmitry Vladimirovich.

From 1975 to 1977 general chemistry department was headed by docent Asanova Olga Leontyevna, then it was managed by docent Abishev Maydan Aytmagambetovich since 1978.

In 1977 chemistry department of pharmaceutical disciplines was reorganized into department of toxicological and analytical chemistry, which was headed by docent – Ushbayev Kenes Ushbayevich, whereas chemistry department of medical faculties was headed by professor Zh.A.Ikhsanov from 1983 to1986 again.

In 1989 chemistry department of pharmaceutical faculty was divided into two departments. One of them was department of toxicological and analytical chemistry, headed by docent Tegisbayev Esbolgan Tegisbayevich. The second department was general chemistry department headed by professor Tulegenova Ardak Urinbasarovna.

General chemistry department undergone various reorganization from 1999 to 2007 years. All this years it was headed by the corresponding member of AMSRK, doctor of pharmaceutical sciences, professor Tulegenova Ardak Urinbasarovna.

From 2008 – 2011 department was headed by the professor Kusainova Zhenis Zhangaliyevna.

In 2011 it was reorganized again and become a part of biochemistry department, headed by professor Pleshkova Svetlana Mikhailovna. Then these departments were separated again and the chemistry department headed by professor Aliyev Nysanaly Uzhetbayevich from2013 to 2015.From 2015 to 2018, chemistry was part on the biochemistry department headed by professor Sharipov Kamalidin Orynbaevich.After the next reorganization in September 2018, the chemistry department was separated again and it is headed by Professor Myrzakozha Diyas Asylbekovich now. There are 9 teachers, including 2 professors, 7 candidates of science in chemistry department. They teach students during the lectures, laboratory and practical classes.
